Reader Rabbit, an educational video game, teaches young kids basic reading and math skills through interactive mini-games

Reader Rabbit is an interactive educational children's game, made for second graders and below to help develop their basic math, reading, and problem solving skills. At such young ages, kids' brains are rapidly developing, so it is very important that they soak up as much knowledge as possible. This game gives kids an exciting and fun way to learn, through playing various mini-games. Each mini-game focuses on improving a certain skill. 

Of course kids are learning these skills in school, but usually not in such an interactive or fun way. In the classroom, teachers many times just distribute worksheets, where students are asked to fill in the blank twenty times on one sheet. This is a fine way of learning and practicing, but it does not work for every kid. Some kids need more incentive to learn, which is where Reader Rabbit comes in. It is full of fun characters, popping colors and backgrounds, and a storyline. Reader Rabbit follows a storyline, where the kids are working towards some end goal.  In order to reach that main goal, they have to play and "win" these educational mini-games along the way.

The upper figure to the right is a screenshot of a math-skill based mini game. Reader Rabbit wants to buy ingredients to make a sandwich. It is up to the player to choose the correct combination of bills and coins to pay for the sandwich ingredients. This is a simple and fun way for kids to learn how to count change, which is a very valuable life skill. Another example of a mini-game is in the lower figure to the right. This is a reading-skills game. Each carrot has a word written on it, and in order to pick the carrots from the ground, the player must match each word with its opposite. Again, this teaches kids a very basic reading skill in a fun and interactive environment. The kids really want to count the change and pick the carrots because they really enjoy playing the games and learning in this environment.
